WSOR Crossing Safety Sign Program
Wisconsin & Southern Railroad is concerned about railroad grade crossing safety. As a way of reminding motorists of the constant danger present at all railroad grade crossings, WSOR initiated a program in 2002 to install Wayside Warning Signs at select troublesome crossings throughout its system. This program continues today.
The signs are there to remind people that trains can't stop quickly. The average freight train traveling at 25mph, such as on the WSOR, can take up to two-thirds of a mile to come to a complete stop.
Wisconsin & Southern Railroad's system has grown to 700 miles of track. "The more track miles you operate, the more you increase the risk of collisions," William Gardner, CEO of Wisconsin & Southern Railroad says. "We have had some people make some bad choices that have cost them dearly. It isn't good for crews who have to go back to the scene of an accident after a collision. They're often the first ones on the scene after a train/vehicle collision, before the paramedics or anybody." he said.
